A violent explosion struck Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas on Saturday. Over 280 people have been injured, while authorities are still struggling to gain full control of the situation.

An Unexpected Tragedy Amid Ongoing Negotiations

On Saturday afternoon, Shahid Rajaee Port in southern Iran turned into a scene of smoke, fire, and confusion. At the same time, Iran was entering a third round of nuclear negotiations with the United States in Oman.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown, but authorities are working intensively to determine exactly what happened.

According to a local crisis management official, the incident occurred when “several containers exploded in the wharf area of Shahid Rajaee Port.” Authorities are currently evacuating the area and transferring the many injured individuals to nearby hospitals.

Chaotic Scenes and Massive Firefighting Efforts

State media report that at least 281 people have been injured. Images from the scene show injured men lying on the asphalt while emergency workers try to regain control. A large fire broke out following the explosion, and firefighting efforts are still ongoing.

Port customs officials stated that the area where the explosion occurred likely contained “dangerous goods and chemicals.” State TV reported that “negligence in handling flammable materials was a contributing factor” to the incident.

Shockwaves Felt Several Kilometers Away

The force of the explosion was so intense that windows shattered several kilometers from the port. Witnesses on the scene described how a massive mushroom cloud rose over the area shortly after the blast.

According to Fars News, the explosion was even heard on Qeshm Island, 26 kilometers (16 miles) south of Bandar Abbas.

Despite the magnitude of the incident, Iran’s National Petroleum Refining and Distribution Company emphasized that “the explosion and fire at Shahid Rajaee Port are not connected to refineries, fuel tanks, distribution complexes, or oil pipelines.”

Speculation Without Confirmation

Memories of past events were reignited, as Shahid Rajaee Port was targeted in 2020 by a major cyberattack that caused massive disruptions.

At the time, Israel was suspected of being behind the attack, but so far there have been no official statements regarding any foreign involvement in this incident. Israel’s military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office have declined to comment.
