Long Arm Toward the Enemy: Israel Upgrades With JASSM Missiles
With a range exceeding 900 kilometers, Israel is gaining new strike capabilities against distant threats—without crossing international borders.
New Precision Strike Capability
Israel’s Ministry of Defense is in advanced negotiations with the United States to acquire the American-made Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM).
The deal centers around the JASSM-ER variant, an extended-range version capable of striking targets more than 900 kilometers away.
Once operational, the missiles will enable Israeli fighter jets—such as the F-35, F-15, and F-16—to hit deep enemy targets while remaining within Israeli or friendly airspace.
Designed for precise, conventional attacks, the JASSM-ER offers a significant tactical advantage in potential conflicts with adversaries like Iran and Houthi rebels in Yemen. It presents a flexible alternative to more strategic systems like the Jericho ballistic missiles.
Greater Flexibility and Operational Freedom
The new missile will complement Israel’s current arsenal, which includes the domestically produced Delilah-GL with a much shorter range of up to 180 kilometers.
The JASSM will thus enable more efficient allocation of air force resources and unlock new strategic planning options.
As one Israeli defense source explained:
“We are gaining a capability that can be used flexibly and with great precision across a range of scenarios—without escalating to strategic weaponry.”
Trump’s Export Policy Eases Restrictions
The likelihood of a successful deal has increased under President Donald Trump’s administration, which has eased export restrictions on long-range munitions.
In the past, the U.S. was reluctant to supply certain weapons to Israel, including the 2,000-pound Mk.84 bombs.
However, the current administration has already approved the sale of thousands of bombs and Hellfire missiles to Israel, and the JASSM agreement appears to align with this more permissive export policy.
Strategic Weapon Choice in a Changing Region
The acquisition of the JASSM-ER is more than just a weapons deal—it signals a strategic shift in Israel’s military doctrine.
The country is moving toward more flexible, surgical strike options tailored to modern threats and conflicts. At a time when precision and minimizing risk to personnel are crucial, these missiles represent both a technological and tactical leap forward.
