The Offensive Widens – More Targets Than First Announced

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed that the new military offensive in Gaza will go much further than previously announced. In addition to Gaza City, the fighting will now also include the so-called “central camps” and the Muwasi area, where, according to the UN, more than half a million displaced people are currently staying.
“This is the best way to end the war quickly,” Netanyahu said at a press conference in Jerusalem.

Deadly Attacks Hit Both Journalists and Civilians

On Sunday evening, Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif was killed along with three other media workers and a driver in an airstrike near Shifa Hospital. The Israeli military claims that al-Sharif was affiliated with Hamas—a claim he had previously denied.
At the same time, reports indicate at least 31 Palestinians were killed while attempting to collect humanitarian aid, with witnesses accusing Israeli forces of opening fire on crowds of people.

International Criticism and Diplomatic Tensions

At the United Nations Security Council, several countries warned against what they called “collective punishment.” The United States defended Israel’s right to self-defense, while Germany has temporarily halted the export of weapons that could be used in Gaza.
“This is no longer a looming famine; this is starvation,” said Ramesh Rajasingham from the UN humanitarian office. However, Netanyahu rejected these accusations, stating: “There is no starvation. There have been shortages, but no famine.”

A Heated Debate Over the Goals of the War

Netanyahu’s plan to maintain Israeli security control in Gaza, while allowing a non-Israeli civil administration to oversee the area, is dividing both international partners and his own government. Critics fear that expanding the offensive will only worsen the already dire humanitarian situation.
