In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Joe Biden warned about the danger of pressuring Ukraine to give up territory for peace. It’s his first major interview since stepping down from the 2024 presidential race, and here he strongly criticizes Trump’s foreign policy.

Biden, speaking from Delaware, called the current administration’s approach a “modern form of appeasement.” “Putin believes Ukraine is part of Russia, and anyone who thinks he will stop if he gets a slice is simply naive,” he said.

A breath away from Europe’s crossroads

The interview coincides with the 80th anniversary of VE Day. That context makes Biden’s warning hit harder. He fears the U.S., under Trump’s leadership, will turn its back on its European allies.

“Europe is beginning to doubt whether the U.S. can still lead,” Biden asserted, referencing proposals to accept current frontlines in Ukraine as permanent.

Zelensky humiliated in the White House

Biden also commented on the February incident between Trump, JD Vance, and Zelensky. Zelensky was criticized for lacking gratitude. “I found it beneath America’s dignity,” Biden said.

A historical and rational appeal

Biden compared Trump’s strategy to Neville Chamberlain’s failed appeasement policy. “It doesn’t work. And it never has,” he said.

If Ukraine loses territory, NATO countries close to Russia may adjust to Putin’s demands. Biden called this a “potentially dangerous” development.

While Trump celebrates his first 100 days, Biden leaves judgment to history: “I don’t see anything triumphant about it.”

A Europe without a clear American partner is, according to Biden, a more dangerous one.
