Amid global hopes for progress following the first direct peace talks in three years between Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin sent a deadly message to the world.

In the early hours of Sunday, Russia attacked Ukraine with 273 drones — the largest drone assault since the war began in 2022.

The Kyiv region, along with the eastern areas of Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk, were primary targets of the Russian offensive, which resulted in at least one death and several injuries, including a child.

A Deadly Night in Kyiv

By 8 a.m. Sunday morning, Ukraine’s air force reported that 88 enemy drones had been shot down, while 128 so-called simulator drones were lost without hitting anything.

Despite these efforts, the Russian assault claimed the life of a 28-year-old woman in the Obukhiv district south of the capital, where multiple residential buildings were also damaged. “Unfortunately, a woman died from her injuries after the enemy attack,” said regional governor Mykola Kalashnik on Telegram.

Just a day earlier, nine civilians had been killed in the Sumy region when a Russian drone struck a minibus. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack “deliberate” and urged tougher sanctions against Moscow.

Peace Talks Without Peace

Friday’s talks in Istanbul marked the first direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine since the start of the invasion.

Although the talks did not result in a temporary ceasefire, they did produce an agreement to exchange prisoners of war: 1,000 on each side.

However, the overnight drone offensive came as a grim response to the diplomatic push.

“It was a tough night. The Russians have always used war and attacks to intimidate their counterparts in negotiations,” wrote Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, on Telegram.

A Cynical Signal

For Putin, the attack seems to be more than mere military strategy. It was a cynical signal — a cold display of power and determination to continue the war regardless of international peace efforts.

With 273 drones launched within a single day, the attack surpassed even the previous record from February 2025, when 267 drones were deployed.

Meanwhile, world leaders are preparing new diplomatic initiatives. U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will speak with both Putin and Zelensky on Monday.

Whether this will prompt the Kremlin to change course remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that Putin’s message in the early hours of Sunday was unmistakable — and bloody: peace is not his priority.
