Romania’s Constitutional Court has unanimously dismissed all allegations of election manipulation, effectively closing the door on George Simion’s attempt to annul the presidential election.

With the words “the request is dismissed as unfounded,” the court put an end to a dramatic election campaign, where accusations of foreign interference have dominated the political climate.

The right-wing populist candidate, known for his EU skepticism and overt admiration for Donald Trump, claimed that both France and Moldova had interfered in the election in an attempt to “manipulate institutions, control the media, and force an outcome that does not reflect the will of the Romanian people.”

However, the court found that there was insufficient evidence, and therefore the election will now be formally validated with Nicușor Dan as the victor. Dan, Bucharest’s centrist mayor and mathematical prodigy, won the second round of the election with 53.6 percent of the votes against Simion’s 46.4 percent.

A Victory for the Pro-Western Path

It was an election that had to be repeated after a previous round in November was annulled due to campaign finance violations and extensive Russian influence.

This time, the Permanent Electoral Authority declared that the election was conducted in “an atmosphere characterized by integrity, fairness, and transparency,” according to The Guardian.

At the same time, there was strong criticism of the allegations Simion made. “False information spread without documentation only serves to undermine citizens’ trust in state institutions,” stated the Electoral Authority in an official statement.

A Country Striving for Balance

The newly elected president now faces a significant task: forming a stable government and reducing Romania’s growing budget deficit – the highest in the EU.

Dan firmly stated that the country’s pro-western course remains unchanged: “Romania will maintain its direction towards the West, which means continued participation in NATO, EU membership, and a strategic partnership with the USA,” he said on Thursday.
