Tragic Pattern Repeats Itself

For the second time in just a few months, Ukraine has lost a large group of soldiers gathered in one place—this time in a Russian missile attack on a rear-area training unit.

Despite earlier warnings and public reprimands about military parades and gatherings in unsecured areas, the scenario appears to be repeating itself.

According to the Ukrainian military, the June 1st strike occurred shortly after an air raid siren was sounded.

Most soldiers reportedly took shelter in bunkers, but the attack still claimed 12 lives and injured more than 60.

Army Denies Mass Gathering—Again

The Ground Forces categorically deny that a parade or large gathering took place. However, the explanation feels like déjà vu.

On Telegram, the military emphasized: “After the air raid alert was issued, the majority of personnel were immediately taken to shelters.” A commission has now been established, and an internal investigation will determine whether there was any negligence.

Rear Areas Under Pressure

The strike adds to a series of incidents in which Russian missiles have hit targets far from the front line. The Ukrainian military has previously faced sharp criticism for underestimating threats to rear areas—and, in some cases, organizing ceremonies and gatherings in inadequately protected zones.

Amid renewed Russian aggression, Ukrainian authorities now promise additional security measures.
