Strategic Bombers in Flames

More than 40 Russian bombers have reportedly been hit in a dramatic Ukrainian drone offensive, described as one of the boldest operations of the war so far. The attacks took place at several airbases, including those near Belaya in the Irkutsk region and Olenya in Murmansk, and were carried out using remote-controlled drones launched from trucks inside Russia.

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) stated that “enemy strategic bombers are burning en masse in Russia,” describing the operation as part of a large-scale campaign aimed at the proud backbone of Russian air defenses. Video footage from Irkutsk shows explosions and thick columns of smoke rising from military facilities.

Attacks Coordinated with Acts of Sabotage

Alongside the drone strikes, two bridges in the Russian border regions of Bryansk and Kursk collapsed, with Russian authorities blaming sabotage. In Bryansk, heavy trucks plunged onto a passenger train, resulting in at least seven deaths. In Kursk, a railway bridge was destroyed as a freight train was passing over it.

Ukrainian intelligence also reported that a military supply train outside Melitopol was hit by an explosion. The train was allegedly headed toward Crimea carrying fuel and equipment.

Negotiations Under a Cloud of Smoke

The attacks coincide with renewed peace talks set to take place in Istanbul. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Sunday that a delegation would travel to Turkey in hopes of achieving a “complete and unconditional ceasefire.” Russia has refused to lay out concrete demands ahead of the meeting and maintains a more secretive stance.

Whether the scale and outcome of this operation will influence the tone of negotiations remains uncertain. However, analysts suggest the drone assault marks a significant escalation in Ukraine’s willingness to bring the war directly to Russian soil.

A New Phase in the War?

With 472 Russian drones and missiles launched toward Ukraine in the same 24-hour period—385 of which Kyiv claims to have shot down—the conflict shows no signs of slowing down. Experts believe that both sides ramping up military pressure ahead of diplomacy may indicate a new and more unpredictable phase of the war.

As the Russian governor of Irkutsk, Igor Kobzev, wrote on Telegram: “The launch site has been secured; there is no threat to civilians.” But one question remains: how far is Ukraine willing to go to push Russia to the negotiating table?
