Fines Up to $2,500: What Ontario Drivers Must Not Overlook

While the annual stress of renewing license plates has become a thing of the past for many Ontario drivers, that doesn’t mean you can go on autopilot.

A new system that automatically renews license plates for most passenger vehicles has been in place since July 2024. But there are critical exceptions that could cost you dearly if ignored.

Not All Vehicles Are Included

The automatic system only applies to certain vehicles under 3,000 kilograms — typically passenger cars, motorcycles, and light-duty trucks. However, if you own a motorhome, snowmobile, bus, or heavy truck, you’re still responsible for manually renewing your plate. If overlooked, fines can reach up to $2,500 for commercial drivers.

Small Mistakes Can Have Big Consequences

It’s not just the type of vehicle that can disqualify you from automatic renewal. If you have unpaid fines, outstanding tolls, or invalid insurance, your plate won’t be renewed automatically. In such cases, you’ll be notified up to 90 days before your plate expires, but it’s your responsibility to take action.

“It’s your responsibility to ensure everything is in order with your vehicle. Otherwise, you’ll be removed from the automatic system,” warns Ontario Transport.

How to Check Your Status

If you’re unsure whether your plate has been renewed, you can easily check online via ServiceOntario. It’s a good habit, especially if your vehicle is close to the weight limit or you’ve had payment issues in the past.

Since the removal of plate stickers in 2022, many have enjoyed the freedom and savings of up to $120 per year. But with freedom comes responsibility. Automatic doesn’t mean carefree.

For Ontario drivers, the message is clear: Keep an eye on your license plate and pay attention to the details that could lead to a hefty fine and an unbearable visit to ServiceOntario.
