Trade relations between the U.S. and Canada are on the brink of a dramatic deterioration following President Donald Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on Canadian imports from 25% to a staggering 35%.

The tariffs will take effect as early as August 1st, intensifying tensions between the two neighboring countries significantly.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has previously aimed to secure a more stable trade relationship with the U.S., now faces a major challenge.

Trump has made no secret that the tariff increase is partly motivated by frustration over what he describes as widespread fentanyl smuggling from Canada into the U.S.

In a letter to Carney, Trump stated that reducing drug smuggling could potentially lead him to reconsider the tariff levels.

Canadian officials have promptly rejected these claims. According to them, only a minimal amount of fentanyl originates from Canada, and the country has already implemented extensive border controls to curb drug flows.

“Canada has made decisive progress in the fight against fentanyl, and we are determined to work with the U.S. to protect lives and communities,” Carney wrote on the social media platform X following Trump’s announcement.

Though the tariff increase applies to many goods, specific exemptions are expected for products covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), as well as energy and fertilizer products, where the tariff remains at 10%.

The U.S. announcement has already created market jitters, with investors fearing further escalation of the trade conflict, particularly in light of Trump’s announced tariffs against the EU and several Asian countries.

Carney therefore faces a significant task in finding solutions that can meet U.S. demands while simultaneously protecting Canadian businesses and jobs from severe economic downturn.
