An Air India passenger plane bound for London crashed on Thursday shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in western India.

Images from the crash site show thick smoke rising from the wrecked plane as rescue workers strive to assess the scale of the disaster.

It is not yet known, Reuters has reported to Indian police that there were at least 242 on board.

“Flight AI171, operating the Ahmedabad-London Gatwick route, was involved in an incident today, June 12, 2025,” Air India stated in a release.

The accident occurred near the airport’s runway, and local media report a significant emergency response was activated immediately after the crash.

The authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the accident, but the airline is cooperating with relevant agencies to clarify the sequence of events.
