As global leaders sharply condemn Israel’s recent military attack on Iran, Tehran has retaliated with a massive drone assault.

Over 100 Iranian drones were sent toward Israeli territory on Friday, according to the Israeli military.

All air defense systems are activated to counter the threat, and we face difficult hours ahead,” said IDF spokesperson Effie Defrin in a press briefing.

Airspace Closure and Diplomatic Strain

Meanwhile, Jordan has temporarily closed its airspace in direct response to the military escalation.

The decision was made to ensure flight safety and in line with international standards, according to the Jordanian Civil Aviation Authority.

Both Iran and Israel have also closed their respective airspaces, and according to Flightradar24, the skies over both countries are nearly empty.

The physical closure of air routes stands as a grim metaphor for the diplomatic door that currently seems shut.

Global Community: From Warnings to Condemnation

Saudi Arabia is among the countries that have reacted most strongly, calling the Israeli attack a “blatant aggression” and a “clear violation of international law.”

The Chinese embassy in Tehran describes the situation as “complex and serious,” urging Chinese nationals in Iran to exercise great caution.

The U.S. has emphasized that they are not involved in the attack. “Our top priority is to protect American forces in the region,” stated Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong expresses concern and calls for diplomacy: “This could further destabilize a region already in turmoil.”

Doubts Over Future Negotiations

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon warns of the risk of miscalculations and calls the attack “an unwanted development.”

He refers to the upcoming US-Iran negotiations concerning the nuclear program in Oman, which are now at risk of being canceled. “Negotiations are the better way forward,” says Luxon, but the question is whether there is any way forward in this heightened conflict.

A Region at Risk

India’s Ministry of External Affairs states that the country “is closely monitoring the developments,” emphasizing the friendly relations with both parties.

The conflict between Israel and Iran is far from new, but last night’s events signal a possible transition to a more intense phase.

Using a unique English expression, the situation can best be described as a maelstrom—a powerful and threatening current that threatens to engulf the entire region.
