A New European Chapter for Patriot Missiles – Ukraine First in Line from 2026
German factory ensures freedom from American restrictions.
Germany is now taking a decisive step towards European independence when it comes to the production of Patriot missiles.
The long-awaited establishment of a German factory paves the way for self-sufficiency in GEM-T missiles, but Ukraine will have to be patient before it can benefit from this development.
European Independence in Focus
During a briefing in Kyiv on July 12th, German Major General Christian Freuding announced that production lines for Patriot missiles are well underway on German soil.
However, the first deliveries are not expected until late 2026 or early 2027.
This new production marks a clear shift toward European control, as Germany will no longer rely on the US for missile supplies.

When asked whether Germany would be able to dispose of these missiles as it sees fit, including delivering them to Ukraine, Freuding emphasized that this would not be a problem.
“It will be independent. It will be a new European production line,” he assured.
In November 2024, MBDA began construction of the new facility in Schrobenhausen, where the GEM-T missiles will be produced.
The new factory, which will create over 300 jobs, is expected to be completed by September 2026. Germany will thus become the only country outside the US with its own production of GEM-T missiles.
Patience in Kyiv
While Germany builds its missile production capacity, Ukraine must wait with anticipation.
The GEM-T missiles produced in Germany will have a range of 160 kilometers against aircraft and cruise missiles, but are slightly less effective against ballistic targets compared to PAC-3 MSE missiles.
Despite the delay, Ukraine views European missile production positively, as it could eventually strengthen the country’s air defenses and reduce dependence on external deliveries.
For now, however, it is a matter of endurance and waiting until Germany officially begins production in 2026.
