Putin’s Easter Pause: A Symbol of Hope – or Just Another Show?

Amid diplomatic talks and ongoing fighting, the question arises: Is this the beginning of something bigger?”

When the U.S. proposed a 30-day ceasefire, Ukraine agreed — but Russia responded with conditions and a much smaller offer: 30 hours.

On Saturday evening, Vladimir Putin announced a unilateral Easter truce in Ukraine, lasting until midnight on Sunday. Framed as a humanitarian gesture, the announcement was met with skepticism in Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted: “The Russian army is trying to create a general impression of a ceasefire, but in some places, it does not abandon individual attempts to advance and inflict losses on Ukraine.”

The Kremlin claimed that Russian troops held their positions and fully observed the ceasefire — instead accusing Ukraine of violations.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts have intensified behind the scenes. Putin’s envoy has met with Trump’s Ukraine adviser three times in two months, and both U.S. and European leaders are actively engaged in talks. Trump himself said negotiations are “coming to a head.”

So was this brief truce a genuine step toward peace — or just another political maneuver in a long conflict? Officially, we only see the tip of the iceberg. What lies beneath the surface remains to be seen.
