Tensions Escalate: Ukraine and Hungary in Diplomatic Showdown
The conflict escalates: Ukraine and Hungary in a diplomatic standoff.
Two neighboring countries, one tense 24-hour period, and a mutual diplomatic retaliation.
Friday took a dramatic turn as both Ukraine and Hungary expelled each other’s diplomats – a significant escalation in the already fragile relationship between Kyiv and Budapest.
It began with a press release from Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, announcing that two Ukrainian diplomats had been declared persona non grata.
According to Szijjártó, the two officials had in reality been acting as intelligence agents under diplomatic cover.
The decision was presented as a response to what Hungary described as a “smear campaign” against its policies related to the war in Ukraine.
Shortly afterward, Kyiv issued a swift counter-response.
48 Hours to Leave the Country
Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, announced on social media platform X that two Hungarian diplomats had been expelled, with a 48-hour deadline to leave Ukrainian territory.
The Ukrainian response came just hours after the expulsions in Budapest – and was directly linked to a public revelation by Ukraine’s Security Service, the SBU.
According to the SBU, a Hungarian military intelligence network had been uncovered in the western Transcarpathia region of Ukraine.
A former Ukrainian soldier and a former female officer allegedly passed sensitive information to Hungary.
Reportedly, the information included military positions, migration trends, and black market arms deals.

Hungary Denies the Accusations
The Hungarian government flatly rejected the accusations, dismissing the entire intelligence case as “Ukrainian propaganda.”
According to Szijjártó, Hungary has neither desired nor attempted to involve itself in the war. “We say no to war, and we have neither sent weapons nor allowed arms to be transported through Hungary to Ukraine. That’s exactly why we’re now being targeted with attacks and disinformation,” he stated.
Ukraine, however, maintains that Hungary has been conducting covert intelligence operations in the western region, where many ethnic Hungarians reside. “The accused worked for foreign intelligence services and undermined Ukraine’s national security,” said an SBU spokesperson.
A New Cold Front in the East
The diplomatic chill between the two nations has been building for some time, but today’s events have sent temperatures plummeting.
Whether this tit-for-tat expulsion is a temporary flare-up or the beginning of a more permanent freeze remains to be seen.
But one thing is certain: The diplomatic game between Ukraine and Hungary is no longer about political disagreement – it has become an open confrontation.
