At a press conference in Copenhagen, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries made it clear how highly the United States values its bond with Denmark.

Accompanied by Ranking Member Gregory Meeks and a bipartisan delegation, Jeffries highlighted the relationship between the two nations as strong, historically rooted, and crucial in an increasingly uncertain world.

Jeffries opened by thanking Denmark for its close cooperation, both politically and within society. “Let me be clear to the people of Denmark: The relationship between our two countries is important, has always been strong, and must remain that way moving forward,” he emphasized.

Denmark Has Answered the Call for 80 Years

In his remarks, Jeffries underscored Denmark’s unwavering support over the past eight decades.

He drew particular attention to times when the world faced great challenges and Denmark repeatedly proved to be a steadfast partner. “Denmark has been a tremendous ally, particularly over the last 80 years, as we’ve worked together to build a rules-based society throughout the world,” he said.

The delegation led by Jeffries included a diverse group of members from across the United States, a reflection of America’s rich societal mosaic.

Yet the bond with Denmark was singled out as something truly special: a partnership built on shared values like democracy, freedom, and respect for rules and institutions.

Standing United Against Global Challenges

Jeffries also reminded the audience how Denmark has stood side by side with the United States in military operations, most notably in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

According to Jeffries, Denmark “unequivocally answered the call” when it was time to defend shared ideals against external threats.

Referring to today’s global challenges, especially those posed by Russia and China to both Europe and the United States, Jeffries emphasized the necessity of maintaining strong cooperation: “The relationship is anchored in our shared history, our shared values, and our NATO partnership.”

The message from Copenhagen was unmistakable: Denmark and the United States not only share a proud past – they are also united in shaping the future.
