New Command Structure for Greenland

The United States is considering transferring military responsibility for Greenland from U.S. European Command (EUCOM) to U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM).

The decision is part of an administrative restructuring within the U.S. Department of Defense.

The reassignment would mean that Greenland, geographically located on the North American continent, would fall under the same command as the U.S. mainland.

Until now, EUCOM has held responsibility due to Greenland’s political and cultural ties to Europe.

Background and Purpose

According to U.S. officials, the purpose of the move is to enhance operational focus on the Arctic and North Atlantic. NORTHCOM, which is responsible for North America, is geographically closer to Greenland than EUCOM’s headquarters in Europe.

Greenland hosts the Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, which plays a key role in surveillance and early warning systems.

No Official Statement Yet

U.S. Northern Command has not made any public comments, and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to issue a statement.

Greenland’s self-government has also been contacted but has not released an official response.

The reassignment is still under consideration and has not been finalized.
