Blackout in Spain and Portugal: Millions Affected by Sudden Power Outage
A massive power outage has paralyzed traffic, phone networks, and metro operations across much of the Iberian Peninsula.
On Monday afternoon, Spain and Portugal were unexpectedly plunged into darkness as a major power outage swept both countries. Spain’s grid operator, Red Eléctrica, announced that “all resources were dedicated to resolving” the situation.
Metro stations, traffic lights, and phone networks were affected, and major cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Lisbon experienced widespread blackouts.
Public Transportation and Phone Networks Down
In Madrid and Lisbon, metro services came to a halt, forcing passengers to evacuate. “We boarded the train, and everything seemed normal.
Then suddenly it went dark,” said Maddie Sephton, a British tourist. Above ground, non-functioning traffic lights caused chaos, and stores were unable to process card payments.
Uncertainty About the Cause
Portugal’s E-Redes reported the issue stemmed from “the European power grid.” A crisis committee was established in Spain, and authorities are working to determine the cause. A possible cyberattack has not been ruled out.
A Fragile European Power Grid
Spain and Portugal share a tightly connected but weakly integrated power grid with the rest of Europe. Today’s blackout highlights the vulnerability of their infrastructure. Citizens were urged to conserve energy while restoration efforts continue.
