Mark Snow, the composer behind the haunting and iconic music of the hit TV series The X-Files, has died at the age of 78.

His agent confirmed the news but gave no cause of death. According to Hollywood trade outlet Variety, Snow passed away peacefully at his home in Connecticut on Friday.

A Musical Icon

Born Martin Fulterman on 26 August 1946 in Brooklyn, New York, Snow studied at the prestigious Juilliard School before embarking on a career in television music in the late 1970s.

He went on to compose the soundtrack for more than 200 episodes of The X-Files, as well as scoring both feature films based on the series.

The Sound of the Paranormal

In 1996, The X-Files theme was released as a single and became an international hit. Its eerie, whistling melody became synonymous with the series’ mysterious and paranormal atmosphere, and Snow’s distinctive tones remain instantly recognisable to millions of fans worldwide.

Over his long and prolific career, Snow was nominated for 15 Emmy Awards.

A Lasting Musical Legacy

Beyond The X-Files, Snow scored music for numerous other acclaimed American television series, including Blue Bloods, Smallville, and Hart to Hart.

He is survived by his wife, Glynnis, three daughters, and several grandchildren.

With Mark Snow’s passing, the television world has lost one of its most creative musical voices – but his melodies will continue to echo as part of an enduring legacy.
